Research Associate- Galaxy Evolution

Prof. Sarah Tuttle at the University of Washington is searching for a Research Associate interested in the details of galaxy formation and evolution, especially focused on the interplay between star formation and gas, and the regulation of star formation rates. This position will focus on observational work and data analysis focused on optical integral field spectroscopy and radio observations of nearby galaxies, with the opportunity to deploy relevant multi wavelength archival data. An interest in hardware and software development is welcome as the group is also building next generation optical spectrographs for Apache Point Observatory. Our group is also developing the fiber system for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-V (SDSS-V), and opportunities exist for involvement in related research in the lead up to SDSS-V. Fifty percent of your time will be available for personally-directed research. We particularly welcome applicants interested in galaxy formation, intergalactic and circumgalactic medium, gas inside and outside of galaxies, areas overlapping with the larger SDSS-V mapper projects, and development of novel hardware approaches. Besides our involvement in SDSS-V, the department has a major share in the Apache Point 3.5m telescope.

The initial appointment is funded for two years and offers competitive salary and benefits. The appointment is expected to start on or around September 2019. A Ph.D. degree in astronomy, physics, computer science, or a related subject is required, and must be conferred before the start date.
