POST DOCTORAL ASSOCIATE POSITION
THEORETICAL ASTROPHYSICS
NIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE

The University of Tennessee is seeking candidates for a post-doctoral research associate to be appointed in the Department of Physics & Astronomy in the research group of Prof. Sherwood Richers.  The appointment is scheduled to begin September 1, 2023, though an earlier appointment is possible. Richers’ research group is presently focused on theoretical modeling of neutrino transport and quantum kinetics in core-collapse supernovae and neutron star mergers. We strongly interact with the Nuclear Astrophysics group at UTK (Mezzacappa, Hix, Steiner), N3AS, NP3M, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Endeve, Messer), and the ExaStar Collaboration.

We are seeking a candidate who will contribute to the monumental task of (1) understanding the microphysical processes and instabilities present in explosive astrophysical environments (2) determining how these processes interact with dense matter, magnetic fields, curved spacetime, radiation, and nucleosynthesis in multiple dimensions, and (3) developing models that serve as robust predictions of multi-messenger signals and tests of fundamental physics.

The successful applicant will:

  • Have demonstrated expertise in the physics of multi-messenger sources, including general relativity, hydrodynamics, neutrino kinetics and flavor transformation, nuclear equation of state, or other areas that would allow for meaningful contributions
  • Be able to identify and pursue research problems independently while working as part of a team to accomplish a larger goal
  • Have experience designing algorithms for high-performance computing using C, C++, Fortran, CUDA, and/or other relevant tools like git or HPC infrastructures
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills

Duties and training will include:

  • Performing excellent research resulting in peer-reviewed publications and presentations at conferences
  • Contributing to open-source codebases as needed for the research
  • Mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in related research
  • Contributing to scientific coordination and collaboration by organizing workshops, seminars, etc. as needed
  • Applying for computing and funding needed to perform the research
  • Public outreach or other activities that use your research/skills to enrich people’s lives outside of the research community

 

Required Education:  PhD in Physics, Astronomy, Computer Science, or a related field completed no later than August 2023. Salary is based on experience and qualifications according to UT policy.
