Postgraduate Research Scholarship in astronomy, space physics and exoplanet detection

The University of Sydney has an exciting PhD scholarship opportunity for students interested in undertaking research in astronomy, space physics and exoplanet detection under the supervision of Professor Peter Tuthill.

The Postgraduate Research Scholarship in astronomy, space physics and exoplanet detection has been developed to support an outstanding postgraduate research student at the Sydney Institute for Astronomy, Faculty of Science within the University of Sydney This scholarship is supported by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) University of Sydney and is open to both domestic and international students.

TOLIMAN is a bold and ambitious mission, seeking to perform high precision astrometry using a 16U satellite in low Earth orbit. This mission employs novel optics that cleverly encodes the science signal, effectively mitigating systematic errors within the system. This innovative approach promises a wealth of data, holding the potential to unveil the very first signal of an Earth-like exoplanet orbiting a sunlike star within our neighbouring star systems.

This project would involve the processing and analysis of resulting on-sky data, utilising a suite of cutting-edge tools developed by our team for TOLIMAN and similar missions. This includes modelling the optical system of the telescope (primarily in Python) for the purposes of image calibration and signal recovery.
