Job Description
Non-Regular, Full-Time, Limited Term (Up to three (3) years in duration), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Institute for Astronomy (IfA), located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
DUTIES: Conducts telescopic observations of Near-Earth Objects (NEO) primarily using data from the University of Hawai‘i (UH) 2.24-meter telescope, the Canada-France-Hawai‘i Telescope (CFHT), and Subaru telescope located on Maunakea in Hawai‘i. Performs astrometric and/or photometric reductions on the acquired data, and develops software that can improve the degree of automation in the processing.
REQUIRES: PhD from an accredited college or university in Astronomy, Physics, or a related field (PhD candidates may apply but must submit evidence of PhD completion upon hire). Experience with telescope observation of faint, moving targets. Experience with astronomical digital detectors. Experience with operating large, research-grade telescopes. Knowledge of issues involved in astronomical image analysis, error propagation, and reference star catalogs. Familiarity with various web resources in the Near-Earth asteroid field. Proficiency in programming languages, in particular, familiarity with the Fortran programming language for the use and modification of existing software. Familiarity with the Windows and Linux operating systems. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.
