Job Description

Responsibilities

The Remote Sensing Department conceives, designs, fabricates, and operates imaging and spectroscopic sensors for space object characterization and earth remote sensing.  Such sensors have been deployed on the ground, in the air, and in space. Specialists work with scientists and engineers in both laboratory and field locations, to develop and operate state of the art remote sensing and astronomical instrumentation. Specialists also coordinate and participate in field collects at astronomical observatories at altitudes up to 14,000 feet. They are also responsible for maintaining operations of a laboratory and a 1-meter telescope.

 

Key Funtions

  • Collaborates with scientists and engineers on laboratory testing. Suggests appropriate materials, test equipment and techniques. Refines test designs as needed.
  • Writes test procedures and equipment operational procedures to support existing and new lab tests or facilities.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment. Builds, repairs, and ensures the calibration of the equipment. Sets up instrumentation for tests.
  • Ensures that all safety rules and regulations are being followed. Attends necessary laboratory safety training.
  • Researches and recommends tools and equipment for capital purchases.
  • May be responsible for multiple laboratories.
  • Coordinates and participates in field data collections

 

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent with at least seven years of experience or equivalent education
  • Experience working with laboratory safety protocols
  • Experience with test instruments
  • Must be able to travel on field operations up to 25% of time
  • Must be able to work at altitudes greater than 10,000 feet
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required

 

Preferred

  • 5 or more years of relevant experience with Associate's Degree in a related discipline
  • Electronic Technician and/or Machine Shop training
