Job Description

Shanghai Astronomical Observatory (SHAO) is seeking to fill several faculty positions in the area of exoplanets and/or techniques. We invite applications from outstanding theorists, observers, data scientists, and technologists in the broad area of planetary sciences, including asteroseismology and stellar activities. SHAO employs a mix of Chinese and international astronomers, astrophysicists, and technical staff, including more than 50 faculty members, 30 technical engineering staff, 20 postdocs, and 80 PhD students. More information can be found at http://astro-en.shao.cas.cn and http://optical.shao.cas.cn/en.

SHAO belongs to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which provides a diverse setting and research facilities, such as LAMOST, FAST etc. The institute also possesses its own facilities such as the 65-m Tianma radio telescope and excellent computational facilities. SHAO is establishing an exoplanet research group and has led several major exoplanet research initiatives, such as development of the Earth 2.0 space mission aiming at detecting habitable Earth-like planets around solar type stars and free-floating low-mass planets with the satellite to be launched in 2026; and development of an optical wide field telescope array at Antarctic aiming at detecting habitable Earth-sized planets around M dwarfs and other transient events.

SHAO is also deeply involved in the SKA project and the CSST project.

Applicants must possess a Ph.D. degree and have a strong established research program in exoplanets related areas, along with a strong commitment to contribute to graduate student training (but no teaching commitment is required). Active researchers of all nationalities are encouraged to apply. The salary and start-up grant will be highly competitive. Applicants should submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and research statement summarizing the applicant’s qualifications, past research, and future research plans, and arrange three reference letters to be directly sent to Prof. Jian Ge at <[email protected]>.

Applications will be considered until the positions are filled and the start date is flexible. To receive full consideration, all application material should arrive before December 9, 2022.
