Job Description

We are seeking an ambitious, highly-qualified postdoctoral researcher to work with Dr. Tobias Buck in the newly established Computational Astrophysics and Machine Learning group at the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR) and the Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics at Heidelberg University (ITA).

The successful candidate will join an active research team and will be expected to play a leading role in the development of physics-informed machine learning (PI-ML) algorithms for astrophysical problems with the main goal of developing PI-ML tools for high performance computing codes.

We particularly invite applications from candidates with strong experience in machine learning, computer science, statistics and/or physics.

The IWR has a long history in the development of computational methods that transcend the boundaries of disciplines and bridge scientific cultures from engineering to the humanities. Heidelberg is one of the major astronomy hubs in Europe and provides a vibrant and leading research environment. The group has strong collaborative ties with other groups at IWR and the Center for Astronomy, as well as the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy.

Applicants should have a PhD in computer science/physics/astronomy or a related field and a solid background in ML and code development. The appointment will be for an initial period of 2 years with a likely extension up to 3 years, subject to performance. The starting date is expected to be beginning of 2023, but can be negotiated. The position is funded by the Carl Zeiss Foundation according to the German public service scale (TV-L E13). Funds will be provided for travel, guests, computing, and publications.

Interested applicants should send a cover/motivation letter, CV, publication list, and a brief (max. 3 page) summary of previous research and future plans in a single PDF file to [email protected] and arrange for three letters of reference to be sent seperately to the same email address. Applications and letters received by Octobre 31, 2022 will receive full consideration, but late applications will be considered until the position is filled.
