The Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics of the Pennsylvania State University has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral researcher to work with Prof. Abe Falcone. A PhD in Physics, Astronomy, or a closely related field is required. The position will entail analysis of archival and new X-ray and gamma-ray data from a range of source classes (e.g. blazars, gamma-ray bursts, binary systems, transients, unidentified astroparticle accelerators, etc.), and the position could also include X-ray astrophysics instrumentation work for the right candidate. The candidate will be expected to develop algorithms for these analysis efforts on existing data (a wealth of data are available from Swift, Chandra, XMM, Fermi, VERITAS, and other instruments), and the candidate will have the opportunity to acquire and plan new observation campaigns and related research efforts. The publication of research results will be expected. Salary will be commensurate with experience. Previous experience with X-ray and/or gamma-ray astronomy data analysis of variable objects using data from Swift, Chandra, Fermi, and/or XMM is highly desired. Penn State is the lead institution for the ACIS instrument on Chandra and for the X-ray Telescope on the Swift Gamma-ray Burst Explorer. The successful applicant will also have the potential for access to other facilities, including the Hobby-Eberly telescope and the VERITAS gamma-ray telescope array.
Applications must be submitted electronically and include a single PDF file containing a CV, publications list, and statement of research interests. In addition, please request three reference letters be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org. Applications will be reviewed as they arrive, beginning on August 9, 2017, and will be accepted until the position is filled.
