Job Description

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science and the Waterloo Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Waterloo invite applicants for a 2-year post doctoral position under the direction of Profs. Will Percival and Glen McGee to work on statistical problems in cosmology. We seek someone willing to work at the interface between statistics and physics who is interested in the development and application of novel statistical techniques to observational data. The successful candidate will work in a small inter-disciplinary team to develop and apply methodology for analysing data, comparing data from different experiments and testing the statistical robustness of those analyses and the way that inferences about the Universe are made.

The candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to high-profile collaborative research with physics experts in the Waterloo Centre for Astrophysics and with statistical experts in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science. Both regularly host a diverse array of seminars, meetings and visitors, offering a rich environment for academic engagement. This position is well suited to either a statistician with interest in applications in physics, or to someone already working in the field of statistical astrophysics/cosmology. Experience with Bayesian inference is preferred but not required.

A competitive salary and research allowance will be provided, and researchers will be able to access additional funding for visitors and hosting meetings. Candidates should apply through Academic Jobs Online: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/21619.

The University of Waterloo respects, appreciates and encourages diversity. We welcome applications from all qualified individuals including women, members of visible minorities, indigenous peoples, and persons with disabilities. Medical Leave Awards and Parental Leave Bursaries are availĀable through the host university. The University of Waterloo main campus where the candidate will be based is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations. Active work toward reconciliation takes place across the university.
