Job Announcement Text:

The Leibniz-Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) invites applications for the Karl Schwarzschild Postdoctoral Fellowship 2023 in the broad area of galactic and extragalactic astrophysics.

Karl Schwarzschild Fellows at the AIP are expected to conduct an independent ambitious research programme, strengthening or complementing the research portfolio of the AIP. The Fellowship 2023 is announced for any of the following topical areas: Milky Way and the Local Volume, Dwarf galaxies and the Galactic Halo, Galaxies and Quasars, Cosmology and High-Energy Astrophysics. Karl Schwarzschild Fellows may also contribute to the development of projects and to the scientific life of the AIP, which includes the co-supervision of students. The Fellowship is awarded for three years and may be extended to up to five years, subject to a mid-term evaluation. The nominal starting date is October 2023, but this is subject to individual arrangements.

The Karl Schwarzschild Fellowship programme at AIP was created 2014 in honour of Karl Schwarzschild (1873–1916), former director of the Astrophysical Observatory Potsdam, to commemorate his many significant contributions to physics and astrophysics. Karl Schwarzschild Fellows are identified in a competitive international search with an alternating focus on stellar and extragalactic astrophysics. The AIP has about 200 employees and is dedicated to astrophysical questions ranging from the exploration of our Sun to the evolution of the cosmos. The AIP offers an open-minded and cooperative working atmosphere in a modern and very well equipped working environment. Potsdam is also the home of the Albert-Einstein Institute for Gravitational Physics, the Physics and Astronomy Department at the University of Potsdam, and several other research institutions.

Applicants should have received their PhD in astrophysics, astronomy, or physics within the last five years; exceptions for family caring and other personal circumstances can be made. To apply, please register at the AIP recruitment portal and follow the instructions to upload the following documents, all in PDF format: Your curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a statement of your past and current research (2 pages), as well as your research plan for the Fellowship (2 pages), together with contact information for three individuals willing to provide reference letters upon request. Applications received until 20 November 2022 will receive full consideration. Applications from scientists of all genders are equally welcome.

Included Benefits:

The position provides a competitive salary based on the German public service scale (TV-L E14) and an individual research budget of 20,000 € for three years. Employer contributions to medical and dental insurance, maternity leave, and retirement benefits are included.
