The LESIA department of Paris Observatory invites application for a PhD on the interpretation of bursts of radiation from the supermassive black hole Sgr A* at the center of the Galaxy. The PhD should start around October 1st 2019.

LESIA is strongly involved in VLTI/GRAVITY, an instrument that combines the light from the four 8-meter telescopes of the Very Large Telescope for studying the vicinity of the Galactic center. The main scientific goal of GRAVITY is to explain the recurrent bursts of radiation of Sgr A* that are likely due to the emission of matter in the very near vicinity of the black hole. As such, these events might be used as probes of the strongly curved spacetime around Sgr A*. The goal of the PhD is to develop models of these bursts of radiation and apply them to interpret the current and near-future GRAVITY data.
