Job Announcement Text:

Applicants are invited for a postdoctoral research position in extragalactic astrophysics in the new group of Jorryt Matthee at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) in Klosterneuburg near Vienna. The position is part of the ERC Starting Grant project AGENTS — Young galaxies as tracers and agents of cosmic reionization. The advertised position is for two years initially, with a possibility of a two year extension. The start date is between 1 September - 1 December 2023.

Candidates with a strong background in observational astrophysics are encouraged to apply. Specific experience with extragalactic observations with JWST and the VLT are considered a strong asset. Other assets could be experience analysing hydrodynamical simulations or using state-of-the-art stellar population synthesis models. Possible projects include: i) the identification of galaxies in the early Universe, ii) the characterisation of the metal-enrichment process in and around early galaxies, iii) the role of galaxies in the reionization of the Universe and iv) the topology of reionization using galaxy observations. Candidates can anticipate to work with the latest observations with JWST and ground-based telescopes such as the VLT. Detailed comparisons to computer simulations are supported.

Postdoctoral researchers are encouraged to develop ownership of their projects and will receive support to travel to international conferences, visit collaborators and are supported in leading new observing projects. Austrian based scientists have access to ESO (e.g. VLT, ALMA) and ESA (e.g. HST, JWST) facilities. At ISTA, the successful candidate will enjoy the spatial proximity of researchers from different areas and ample support for career development.
