Job Description

The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado is encouraging applications for a Ph.D. research scientist in the field of astronomical instrumentation to support new and ongoing programs within the Colorado Ultraviolet Spectroscopy Program (CUSP) research group (https://lasp.colorado.edu/home/cusp/). The successful applicant will be involved in the final integration and testing of the SPRITE far-ultraviolet spectroscopic mission, as well as be given the opportunity to lead smaller technology development and demonstration projects centered on multi-object and integral field spectroscopy in space. Current active projects within the group include instrument demonstrations of UV IFUs enabled by image slicers, MEMS micromirror devices, UV transmitting fiber optics, and the development of advanced mirror coatings.

This position is as part of CU Professor Brian Fleming’s research group; a multi-disciplinary experimental astrophysics team that includes undergraduate and graduate students drawn from a broad range of academic backgrounds, as well as both engineers and other scientists. The successful applicant should expect to interact regularly with and mentor undergraduate and graduate students as a part of the broader CUSP team.
