Job Description

Lunar and Planetary Laboratory of the University of Arizona invites applications for a post-doc position to work with Dr. Tommi Koskinen on the escape and evolution of (exo)planetary atmospheres.  The successful candidate will work on models of exoplanet upper atmospheres, developing new models for radiative transfer, photochemistry and dynamics of escaping atmospheres.  These models will be used to interpret currently available observations exoplanet upper atmospheres and to choose the best targets/observables for future searches.  Some examples of ongoing efforts include the interpretation of ultraviolet transit data, including the detection of heavy atoms and ions, as well as the recent observations of the hydrogen Balmer line, metastable helium and high resolution lines of sodium.  The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in the preparation for the NASA Colorado Ultraviolet Transit Experiment (CUTE) mission.

The Lunar and Planetary Laboratory and the University of Arizona offer a world-class research program in astronomy, physics and planetary sciences, including research into atmospheres ranging from exoplanets to the planets, dwarf planets, satellites and comets in the solar system.  The successful candidate will be able to foster collaborations with many talented researchers at the university.

Candidates should have a PhD in planetary science, exoplanets or a related field and experience in numerical modeling.  A background in modeling atmospheres and/or exospheres/magnetospheres is an advantage.  Candidates should email professor Koskinen ([email protected]) for more information and/or apply to Job Posting P20683 at www.uacareers.com.  Applications should include a cover letter, CV, a brief statement of research plans and contact details for two referees.
