University of Michigan ELT Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Department of Astronomy at the University of Michigan welcomes applications for a post-doctoral fellowship position related to science uniquely accomplished with extremely large telescopes (ELTs). It is anticipated that this appointment will be renewed annually for up to a total of three years, contingent upon satisfactory performance. Successful applicants will undertake a research program of their own design that will have impact on science that can only be done with the next generation of extremely large telescopes such as the ESO 39-meter ELT. Our department has invested in the ESO ELT instrumentation program and are members of consortia building HARMONI, METIS, ANDES, and MOSAIC. Our department has international leadership in areas of star and planet formation and exoplanets, compact object and high energy astrophysics, as well as galaxy formation and evolution. Faculty-led research groups use observations, numerical simulation, and theory, as well as develop new instrumentation.

Successful applicants will have access to departmental facilities such as the Magellan telescopes, the MDM Observatories, SWIFT, high performance computing clusters, and other facilities (please see http://www.lsa.umich.edu/astro/).  Interdisciplinary research collaborations between the Departments of Astronomy, Physics, Earth and Environmental Sciences, as well as Climate and Space Sciences, are supported through the Michigan Institute for Research in Astrophysics.  The University of Michigan is recognized as a top academic employer and Ann Arbor, Michigan is routinely recognized for its high quality of life.
