The Rutgers University Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a postdoctoral research position to collaborate with Profs. Eric Gawiser and Saurabh Jha on cosmological studies as part of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory (LSST) Dark Energy Science Collaboration.
The successful applicant will engage in collaborative research to quantify and mitigate astrophysical systematic uncertainties on the five dark energy probes being pursued by the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration, with an emphasis on galaxy clustering and supernova cosmology. They will have an opportunity to join the Rubin commissioning team to work with the first data from this revolutionary facility.
Candidates should mention any relevant experience in cosmological parameter forecasts, applications of machine learning to astrophysical data, or analysis of Stage III dark energy surveys. The postdoctoral researcher will be encouraged to learn new skills and will be offered conscientious mentoring and a supportive and collaborative research environment. There will be an opportunity for independent research, including access to Rutgers' 10% share of the Southern African Large Telescope.
Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. Candidates from traditionally under-represented backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.
The position is intended for two years starting in July 2022, offers geographical flexibility along with a competitive salary and benefits, and is renewable for a third year if mutually agreeable. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in physics or astronomy prior to appointment. The campus is located 45 min from New York City in an area with several astrophysics institutes and departments, facilitating rich knowledge exchange and collaborations.
Interested candidates can apply via the Rutgers Employment Opportunities webpage https://jobs.rutgers.edu/postings/147734 and are asked to submit a cover letter, a CV noting any equity and inclusion activities in which the candidate has been involved along with a list of publications, and a brief (2-3 page) description of research interests and experience. Please also arrange for 3 letters of reference to be emailed to Lisa Rivera ([email protected]). Complete applications, including letters, received by January 4, 2022 will receive full consideration.
