Job Description

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral appointment in observational extragalactic astronomy at Leiden Observatory, Leiden University. The successful candidate will work with Prof. Serena Viti on the topic of observational extragalactic astrochemistry. The postdoctoral appointment will be for 3 years and is funded by the ERC Advanced Grant MOPPEX (ID: 833460).

The ERC project, MOPPEX, centres on the use of molecules to shed light on the physical and chemical structure of nearby  galaxies, in order to characterize  the energetic processes, as well as the dense gas structure, that determine their appearance.

Leiden Observatory is the largest astronomy department in the Netherlands, with about 35 faculty and adjunct faculty, 50 postdoctoral researchers, 50 MSc and 80 PhD students, and 30 support staff. Leiden is a charming university town with international flair.

The successful applicant will be expected to reduce and analyse submillimeter data of nearby galaxies, as well as applying in-house chemical and radiative transfer models. Experience in the reduction and analysis of submillimeter interferometric data is a pre-requisite. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in astronomy or physics. The three year position is available as of 1 September, 2020. Applications should be submitted electronically at https://jobs.strw.leidenuniv.nl/2020/VitiPD/ by the deadline of 31 March 2020. A complete application includes a cover letter, CV, publication list, and a two-page statement of research experience and interests. In addition, applicants should arrange for three reference letters to be submitted at the same address before the indicated deadline. Questions may be directed to Professor Serena Viti ([email protected]).
