The Georgia State University Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy operates the CHARA Array, one of the most powerful optical interferometers in the world, at Mount Wilson Observatory in California. CHARA is seeking to hire a versatile individual to act as an assistant site manager. This position is currently funded for five years and will include these following duties:

  • Maintenance of buildings, telescopes, telescope enclosures, roads and the general site of the facility.
  • Working with cryogenic systems within the Array.
  • Occasional electrical and mechanical work including designing and machining of replacement and new parts for equipment.
  • Cleaning of large mirrors and other telescope optical systems.
  • Purchase of equipment and supplies.
  • Working with the scientific staff on the mountain to facilitate astronomical observations.
  • Operation of snow clearing equipment and other facility vehicles, both on and off site.
  • Occasional travel off the mountain to pick up supplies and equipment.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree or Associate degree in a related field and three years of experience in a scientific or research organization; or high school diploma and seven years of relevant experience; or a combination of education and related experience. Must be in good physical condition and be able to perform labor and lifting tasks.

Preferred Hiring Qualifications:

  • Experience in the use of optical systems.
  • Experience in instrument fabrication.
  • Experience in real-time problem solving.
  • Willingness to work night-time and other non-standard hours.
  • Willingness to work alone at a remote mountain location (elevation of 6,000 feet).
