As we move into a new phase of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey with the start of SDSS V in 2020, New Mexico State University is looking for a Telescope Observing Specialist at Apache Point Observatory (APO) to Observe for SDSS IV and V.
Responsibilities include but not limited to; Operate SDSS 2.5m Telescope and spectrographs for collecting night time astronomical data. Includes pre and post observing checkouts, night time observing, weather and performance monitoring, light troubleshooting and repairs and miscellaneous observing support duties.
This involves night time shift work on the mountain at 9300 ft MSL, may include some weekend and holiday work.
We are looking for individuals with a B.S. in related field with experience in astronomical observing. Must have good people and written and oral communication skills.
