Job Description

We seek a Research Engineer/Senior Research engineer for a permanent position developing high data throughput data storage and processing solutions as part of an exciting international project. At Onsala Space Observatory you will play a central role in the establishment of the Swedish data processing node of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). The SKA is an international project to build the world’s largest radio telescope and one of the most challenging scientific projects of the early 21st century, not least in terms of its data management and processing challenges. User interaction with SKA data will be achieved via a network of SKA Regional Centre (SRC) nodes located in SKA member countries, including Sweden. This network will provide users with access to the SKA data archive and the platform for creating advanced data products – requiring in many cases the application of Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial intelligence (AI) methods for automated source detection and characterization.

About the position
You will work with other Digital Research engineers and astronomers at Chalmers as part of a multi-disciplinary team in developing the Swedish SRC node. Your primary role within this team will be to work with providers of computing and storage resources at Chalmers in integrating these resources as part of the international SRC network. This work will require developing workflows and being involved in tests of data transfer and distributed data processing. You will also work closely with astronomers in supporting the implementation of pipelines for the automatic processing of real data from existing SKA precursor telescopes, and of simulated SKA data as part of data challenges. Additionally you will contribute to planning the deployment of new computing hardware to meet the future needs of the Swedish SRC node. A suitably qualified candidate will be able to spend up to 30% of their time developing applications software for radio astronomy, including the possibility of working with others in implementing ML/AI or data visualization applications.

Qualifications
A PhD or Masters degree in a relevant field of Science or Technology, or an equivalent industry experience and level of knowledge. Education in Data Engineering or related areas is a merit. Documented experience of use of advanced digital techniques in Data Engineering and/or High-Performance Computing supporting large data volume scientific/technical projects is required, potentially also including advanced development of these techniques. The position also requires good communication skill in both spoken and written English. Demonstrated success in working within collaborative projects is considered a strong asset. Experience of successfully working within groups and networks containing a wide range of different competences and interests both locally and virtually with international colleagues is a merit. It is also meritorious to have a record of working for equality and diversity within the workplace.
