Job Description

The Department of Astronomy in the College of Letters and Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks candidates for a position at the tenure-track level. Applications at the associate professor level may be considered in exceptional cases. A Ph.D. in astronomy or a closely related field and a strong record of original published research are required. Duties include research, teaching, and service.

The Department of Astronomy is strongly committed to a diverse and inclusive academic environment. Women and candidates from member groups traditionally under-represented in the field of Astronomy are strongly encouraged to apply.

Current departmental areas of expertise include: the interstellar and intergalactic medium, stellar astrophysics, galaxies and active galactic nuclei, observational cosmology, computational astrophysics, plasma astrophysics, high energy astrophysics; radio/sub-mm, IR/optical and X-ray observation; and instrumentation; additional areas of department interest include the study of exoplanets and planet formation, time-domain astronomy, and multi-messenger astrophysics.

Faculty applicants are invited to take advantage of Department facilities. We are currently partners in the WIYN 3.5m telescope on Kitt Peak (including the NEID exoplanet spectrograph) and in the 11m Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) in South Africa. We are a full institutional member in the SDSS IV consortium. Other facilities include the Washburn Laboratories instrumentation lab and the UW-Madison Center for High-Performance/High-Throughput Computing. We further anticipate participation in the SDSS V survey as well as partnership in radio and mm-wave facilities in the near future. The University of Wisconsin also hosts the Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center (WIPAC) and the Wisconsin Plasma Astrophysics Laboratory (WIPAL).

Applicants should provide a cover letter detailing what motivates them to apply for the position, a curriculum vitae, a bibliography, a 3-page summary of research interests, a 1-page statement of teaching interests and philosophy, and a 1-page statement describing how they plan to foster an inclusive and diverse research and learning environment at UW-Madison, as well as contact information for three references. Applications must be submitted through the UW-Madison online portal at http://jobs.hr.wisc.edu/cw/en-us/job/499330/professor-of-astronomy-and-astrophysics. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Applications received by December 1, 2018 are guaranteed full consideration.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is an Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Employer. Confidentiality may be requested in writing, but cannot be guaranteed for finalists. A criminal background check may be required prior to employment.
