Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position (2+2 years) and a PhD position (4 years) within the Extreme Universe research group of the University of Geneva (UNIGE), in Geneva, Switzerland, under the supervision of Dr. Dominique Eckert. The two SNSF-funded positions will be dedicated to observational and theoretical studies of galaxy groups and clusters.
Project description:
The selected candidates will work on several Large Programs on ESA’s XMM-Newton observatory. The work will be focused mainly on the exploitation of a newly approved Large Program targeting a sample of 49 galaxy groups (https://www.astro.unige.ch/xgap/) with the aim of understanding the influence of AGN on their large-scale environment. The successful applicants will also have the opportunity of working on the performance verification data of the upcoming XRISM mission.
Applicants with backgrounds in extragalactic astronomy and astrophysics and/or computational research are welcome to apply. Particularly encouraged are applicants with a background in multi-wavelength extragalactic observations (X-ray, optical, radio, ...) or numerical simulations of structure formation or AGN feedback.
