X-RAY ASTRONOMY EXPERIMENTAL SCIENTIST

The Astrophysics Office of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center invites interested scientists to apply (via usajobs.gov) for a civil-service astrophysicist research position in the area of X-ray Astronomy. The new position is at the GS-13 level, which is typically commensurate with an early career PhD scientist with 2-3 years of research experience beyond the PhD. US citizenship is required for this position.

The successful candidate will contribute to one or more of several possible experiments such as the Chandra X-ray Observatory or the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer and/or the development X-Ray optics and/or X-ray detector development. The position requires a mastery of one or more specialty areas in astronomy or physics sufficient to apply new developments and theories to critical and novel problems; extend and modify approaches, precedents, and methods to solve a variety of scientific and technical problems with unprecedented aspects; and make decisions or recommendations that significantly affect the content, interpretation, or development of major policies or programs concerning critical or major scientific technical issues.

The work includes the resolution of a broad range of critical or highly unusual scientific problems, development of innovative approaches or guides, or the determination of the effectiveness and validity of proposed or current policies and programs. The scientist serves as an expert advisor and consultant to officials and managers within or outside the agency on a broad range of scientific activities and broad policy issues.

PhD in physics, astrophysics or astronomy plus a relevant post-doctoral level research experience are expected. The incumbent would be part of a large, experienced and world-renowned experimental, X-ray astronomy group with access to The Astrophysics Office labs and facilities as well as to other labs and facilities at Marshall Space Flight Center.”
