Announcement
Job Announcement Text:

Applications are invited for a PhD position in Computational Astrophysics in the Theoretical Astrophysics group at the University of Cologne, Germany. We aim at bridging the gap between local studies of star formation and feedback and the galaxy-scale evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM). This is done utilizing three-dimensional, high-resolution simulations, which require high-performance computing. We use both grid-based and SPH schemes, but the main focus for the offered position is on grid-based codes (FLASH). The position is offered within the ERC-Starting Grant Project RADFEEDBACK of Prof. Dr. Stefanie Walch.

The successful applicant should have a background in physics or astrophysics and, most importantly, programming experience (with C/C++/or Fortran, preferentially using MPI parallelization) and a strong interest in scientific computing. He/she will work on star formation and the impact of radiative feedback from massive stars. This task involves both, the development and improvement of simulation techniques, as well as to carry out and analyze the high-resolution, 3D simulations and compare them with recent observations.

Candidates should hold a MSc. degree in physics, astronomy or a related field. The appointment will be for three years. The salary is based on the German E13 TV-L scale (50% position), which accounts for experience and qualification. The University of Cologne is an equal opportunity employer in accordance with German laws. Women, minorities and persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. Closing date for application is January 30, 2019, but search will continue until the position is filled. Applicants should send a single PDF file containing a CV, educational record, and a short statement of research interests. Please indicate your possible starting date and arrange for two letters of recommendation to be sent to Mrs. Huyen Nguyen with cc to Prof. S. Walch by the deadline. Electronic applications are encouraged. The possible starting date is April 2019.
