Postdoctoral Teaching and Research Fellowship in Astronomy. The Five College Astronomy Department (FCAD) invites applications for a three-year postdoctoral fellowship, to be hosted by Amherst College, with a tentative start date of July 1, 2020, but no later than August 20, 2020.
The Five College Consortium, which comprises Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst), values diversity in its many forms – gender and gender identity, race, ethnicity, nationality, socioeconomic status – among others. We believe that such diversity makes an essential positive contribution to our educational and scholarly missions. We expect that the successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse, and will work cooperatively with similarly diverse staff and faculty.
The fellowship combines opportunities for education and individual research in a unique and stimulating academic environment. The educational component will consist of teaching two undergraduate classes in observational astronomy each academic year, including leading a one-week observing trip using a telescope at a professional facility such as the Kitt Peak National Observatory. The fellow is also expected to conduct a strong research program that is synergistic with existing research in the FCAD and that has potential for undergraduate contributions. Applicants will have the opportunity to participate in science projects with the Large Millimeter Telescope in Mexico. More details about the position can be found here https://www.amherst.edu/mm/576327.
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in astronomy. Please submit applications at https://apply.interfolio.com/69415 with (1) a cover letter; (2) a curriculum vitae; (3) a statement of research goals and a proposal for a research project that would be conducted during the candidate’s time in the FCAD; (4) a statement of educational goals and teaching experience, including an indication of the courses in Observational Astronomy that the candidate would offer; and (5) three confidential letters of recommendation. Review of applications will begin December 1, 2019, and continue until the position is filled.
