Contract Type: Open Ended.

Location: Science and Technology Facilities Council, UK Astronomy Technology Centre, Edinburgh.

Come and do the kind of software engineering that got you into technology in the first place. Work with cutting-edge tech and world-leading scientists and engineers, and be involved in projects that improve daily life in the UK and far beyond.

Put simply, come and discover the impact you can make when you're equipped, encouraged and inspired to perform to your very best.

As a software engineer at the UK ATC, you will have the opportunity to play a leading role in developing software for the next generation of astronomical instruments and telescopes. Your initial role will be to join the international teams designing and implementing software for the ALMA data processing pipeline and the ALMA Observing Tool.

Your knowledge and experience of astronomy will help the teams deliver software that meets the needs of the ALMA observatory. You will also have opportunities to contribute more broadly to the wider activities at the UK ATC. As a senior software engineer within the Software Engineering Group, you will have opportunities to innovate and decide the technical direction of your projects, and to develop new technical solutions.

We are looking for someone with:

  • An excellent knowledge of astronomy or astrophysics.
  • An understanding of working observatories, radio or millimetre telescopes and astronomical instrumentation.
  • A proven ability to translate science community needs into technical requirements.
  • A good knowledge of modern software development processes.
  • Experience using Python, Java, Javascript/Typescript, C++, or similar languages.
  • Demonstrable ability to work proactively and collaboratively as part of a team.

Employee Benefits:

We are offering a permanent position with a whole host of benefits including:

  • 30 days holiday (in addition to 10.5 bank holidays and privilege days).
  • Flexible working hours.
  • An excellent defined average salary pension scheme.
  • Employee shopping/travel discounts.
  • Excellent learning and development opportunities.
  • Visa Sponsorship for candidates applying outside of the UK.

Plus many more benefits and wellbeing initiatives that enable our employees to have a great work life balance!

We are committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce. We are invested in creating an environment that is welcoming and supportive of all, to help us achieve the highest possible standards in our work and organisation together. In this regard, we encourage applications from under-represented groups.

We ask some of the biggest questions in the universe, to answer some of the biggest challenges in the world. Together, our scientists, technologists, engineers and business-support team explore the unknown across every field you could think of. And they turn what they find into work that changes the world around us.

What could you achieve with the world-leading facilities and experts of one of Europe's largest research organisations by your side? Join us and discover what's possible.
