The Department of Astronomy at the University of Virginia invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position. The candidate will join a diverse department with expertise in theoretical and observational astronomy and astrochemistry. Applicants, either observers or theorists, who will strengthen the collaboration between the Department of Astronomy and NRAO are encouraged to apply. The Headquarters of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) and the North American ALMA Science Center are located on the campus of the University of Virginia.

The Department has guaranteed access to the Large Binocular Telescope, Apache Point Observatory, and Steward Observatory (including the Magellan Telescopes in Chile). The Department is a partner in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) IV collaboration and is leading the APOGEE-2 Project. The Department also hosts the Virginia Institute for Theoretical Astronomy (VITA). Further, the University of Virginia is committed to establishing an Anchor Program in Advanced Astronomy Data within the University's Data Science Institute to develop solutions to computational and data management challenges.

Candidates are expected to be dedicated to our mission and passionate about research and teaching in a world-class institution. In addition to securing external funding to support research endeavors, candidates will be expected to teach astronomy at the graduate and undergraduate levels and provide service to the University, Department, and professional organizations. The appointment begins with the fall term of 2017, with an anticipated start date of July 25, 2017. Applicants must be on track to receive a Ph.D. in the relevant field by May 2017 and must hold a PhD at the time of appointment. Candidates with some postdoctoral experience are highly preferred.
