The Department of Astronomy at Boston University invites applications for a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor (VASTP) for the 2021/2022 academic year. The VASTP will teach two introductory astronomy courses in the fall semester and one in the spring semester. The fall courses (AS101: The Solar System and AS102: The Astronomical Universe) are general education introductory courses for undergraduate non-science majors and feature rooftop observing and daytime laboratory components. The spring course will be a repeat offering of AS102. Supporting these courses, the VASTP will supervise multiple teaching fellows and hold regular office hours on campus. The VASTP may also submit funding proposals, apply for observing time to support research and/or teaching on the 1.8m Perkins Telescope Observatory or the 4.3m Lowell Discovery Telescope via proposals to the internal time allocation committee, and is encouraged to engage in the full intellectual life of the Department, including participating in seminars and committees and mentoring research students at all levels.

The Astronomy Department and its affiliated research centers, the Center for Space Physics (CSP; http://www.bu.edu/csp/) and the Institute for Astrophysical Research (IAR; http://www.bu.edu/iar/), are committed to valuing the principles of inclusion, equity, and diversity in all academic and research settings at Boston University through building a collegial and supportive community of scholars and students.

A PhD in Astronomy or a closely related field must be completed before the position begins. Applications should be submitted via https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/18480. Complete applications must include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a brief (1 page) statement of teaching interests and teaching philosophy, and a statement of experience with diversity, inclusion, equity, and outreach (1 page). A brief (1 page) research statement is optional. Candidates should arrange for three confidential letters of reference to be submitted through Academic Jobs Online. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
