Job Description

The Subaru Telescope, an 8.2m optical infrared telescope atop Maunakea in Hawaii, has been in operation since 1999. Subaru Telescope will enter to the new stage “Subaru 2” from 2022. We enforce the observation power of the telescope with PFS (Primary Focus Spectrograph), ULTIMATE-Subaru (GLAO (Ground Layer Adaptive Optics) assisted near-infrared wide field imager and spectrograph), and other new cutting-edge instruments.

The PFS is an upcoming key instrument, which enhances wide-field capability of the Subaru Telescope. It is a fiber-fed, multi-object spectrograph that enables us to take spectra of about 2400 objects in Φ1.3° field-of-view simultaneously in the wavelength ranging between 0.38 and 1.26 µm. The PFS is now under development by an international collaboration led by Kavli IPMU.

We invite applications for an assistant professor position for the PFS project at Subaru Telescope. The successful candidate for this position is expected to:
1) lead the commissioning, science verification and science operation of the PFS in collaboration with the PFS Project Office of Kavli IPMU,
2) develop the science strategy including large survey programs based on the international collaboration of the PFS,
3) promote his/her own research activities on related science fields, and
4) foster young scientists including PhD students.
In addition to these main roles, the successful candidate is also expected to contribute to develop future astronomical science projects of Subaru2 in cooperation with the Science Officer of Subaru Telescope.
