Job Description

The Department of Physics at the University of Bath invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in galaxy evolution.

The successful applicant will work with members of the Bath Astrophysics Group (http://www.bath.ac.uk/physics/research/astrophysics/) whose research interests include galaxy structure and kinematics, stellar populations, star formation and ISM conditions, and galaxy - black hole co-evolution. We welcome applications from candidates with expertise to engage in research projects exploiting multi-wavelength imaging and (3-D/integral-field) spectroscopy to study galaxies since the peak of cosmic star formation in their cosmological context, and to model stellar populations of large samples of quasars to understand the timing of AGN triggering. Candidates with expertise in spectral analysis, stellar population modelling and/or statistics are especially encouraged to apply.

Bath astrophysicists probe the evolution of galaxies using the world’s most powerful ground- (VLT, ALMA, soon LSST) and space-based telescopes (HST, soon JWST). Group members also have privileged access to the University's high performance computer cluster (http://www.bath.ac.uk/bucs/services/hpc/), have the opportunity to attend regular seminars and colloquia, and hold weekly group meetings where topics on galaxy evolution are discussed alongside scientific developments in time domain astronomy and high-energy studies of black hole driven phenomena.

Applicants should hold a PhD in astrophysics (or related discipline) before taking up the position (nominally Oct. 2018, but earlier start dates possible. The appointment is offered for a period of up to 36 months. As a member of the Bath Astrophysics Group, the successful applicant will excellent support for their research including access to travel, computing, career development and training.

The Department and the University are committed to providing a supportive and inclusive working environment. Women and under-represented minorities are encouraged to apply.

Applicants should upload a letter of application, Curriculum Vitae, brief statement of research interests (maximum 2 pages) and provide the names of two referees.

For informal enquiries about the role, please contact Dr Stijn Wuyts ([email protected]), Dr Carolin Villforth ([email protected]) or Professor Carole Mundell (Head of Department) [email protected]
