Program Manager, grade 14/15

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO), part of the Smithsonian Institution, is widely recognized as the largest and most diverse astrophysical institution in the world, with a staff that carries out a broad program of research in astronomy, astrophysics, and planetary, earth, and space sciences. The Program Manager leads and supports SAO’s participation in a range of current and future space flight missions, and the development of ground-based technologies. The Manager primarily manages missions and projects, but also takes a lead role in identifying opportunities, conducting studies of NASA missions, submitting proposals for future mission opportunities, and developing new technologies.

SAO has teamed with NASA’s Ames Research Center, Northrop Grumman, and other institutions to propose Arcus, $300M satellite that would provide the highest and most sensitive X-ray grating spectra available. The Manager will play a key role in this effort and other similar missions. The Manager will lead the project’s coordination with NASA, industrial contractors, and university partners. The incumbent will establish and manage schedules, budgets and subcontracts for technology development within SAO to support such a mission. Beyond Arcus, the Manager will be involved in Program Management best practice development in both project management and proposal generation. To join this exciting organization, apply today!
