Job Announcement Text:

The University of Delaware’s Department of Physics & Astronomy invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position beginning September 1, 2018 (a later start can be negotiated). Under the direction of Assistant Professor Frank G. Schröder, the Postdoctoral Researcher will engage in research on radio detection of cosmic-ray air showers and design of a future antenna array. The optimization of the antenna array requires on the one hand hardware activities related to the antenna and electronics design and, on the other hand, computational skills for detailed simulation studies and analysis of the first data. The goal is to develop and deploy a reliable radio array performing accurate measurements of air showers in coincidence with other surface detectors. First prototype measurements in coincidence with the IceTop detector in Antarctica will take place in early 2019. Tasks may include calibration, deployment, development of trigger strategies at hardware and software level, integration of the data handling and analysis in the IceCube software framework, and the characterization of the performance of the radio array. The individual tasks will be adapted to the flow of the project, and adjusted to the skills of team members and collaborators. The work will be performed within the framework of the IceCube Collaboration. Results are to be shown at collaboration meetings and conferences and should be published in international peer-reviewed journals.

Applicants must have a PhD in physics or closely related field, expertise in astroparticle physics or rel. field, experimental & computing skills, peer-reviewed publications commensurate with exp., interest in collaborative research, & willingness for international travel including possible research stays at Antarctica. Expertise in related activities, air-shower detection, radio antennas, fieldwork for astroparticle experiments, as well as C++ and Python programming, are highly welcomed.

To Apply: In addition to completing the UD Online application (http://www.udel.edu/udjobs. Job ID  105588) and uploading their CV, applicants should arrange to have three reference letters emailed to Dr. Frank G. Schröder at [email protected] . Review of applications will begin July 16 and continue until filled.

Additional information: Available by contacting Dr. Frank G. Schröder ([email protected]).

Note: This one-year appointment is eligible for renewal two more times for a total of three years, based on the availability of funding and satisfactory performance. This F/T position includes full UD benefits (www.udel.edu/benefits).
