The East Asian Observatory (EAO) of Hilo, Hawai’i, is looking for an addition to the team operating the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) near the summit of Maunakea. This is a Regular, Full-Time, Non-Civil service position with the EAO, through the Research Corporation of the University of Hawai’i (RCUH).
The JCMT is at almost 14,000 feet and during these night shifts (average thirteen (13) hour shifts for periods of five to six (5–6) days) the post holder will be away from home, staying in accommodation near the 9,000 ft. level at Hale Pohaku. Must be able to pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination and maintain proof of high altitude clearance and possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR/AED; both must be maintained throughout duration of employment.
The successful applicant will operate the JCMT related computers, instruments and sub-systems to help obtain high-quality astronomy data. The position requires technical, scientific, and logistical support to astronomers before, during, and after their observing runs, and assistance with their data analysis. The post holder will work independently at a remote site with responsibility for the observatory for that operational shift and have authority and responsibility for the safety of personnel at the site. The position requires the post holder to interpret, assess, advise and carry out instructions from international visiting scientists, engineers and technicians, some of whom may be unfamiliar with the facility and Maunakea. No experience required, training will be provided.
