Job Description

These competitive prize postdoctoral research fellowships are intended to attract outstanding early-career scientists to the Enrico Fermi Institute of the University of Chicago. We expect to award two or more fellowships this year to a candidate from a pool of international applicants.

The initial appointment is for one year, renewable annually, for up to three years. The appointment carries a salary and benefits package comparable to other prize fellowships, with an additional allocation for independent research support.  Appointees are given the freedom to work independently or in association with EFI faculty in a research area of common interest.  The appointment would be at the internal University rank of Postdoctoral Scholar, which is open only to those individuals who are less than seven years beyond attainment of the Ph.D. degree. Priority will be given to those candidates who received their Ph.D. in 2014 or later. There are no teaching responsibilities associated with this position.

The Enrico Fermi Institute is an interdisciplinary research unit within the Division of Physical Sciences of the University of Chicago. The Institute's activities include the following: string theory and theoretical high-energy physics, experimental high-energy physics, theoretical astrophysics and cosmology, experimental particle astrophysics, infrared and optical astronomy, cosmic microwave background observations, general relativity, and cosmochemistry.

One application is sufficient to be considered for all research fellowships.  Instructions and a link to the fellowship application can be found at http://efi-fellowships.uchicago.edu. Candidates will be asked to supply the following documents: cover letter; curriculum vitae; bibliography of publications and preprints; description of research interests to be pursued at the University.

At least three letters of recommendation will be required, from faculty members or senior scientists who are active in the relevant field of study. Applicants must provide contact information, including email addresses for each referee. A link will be provided by the application system for uploading letters. Candidates are then responsible for having their referees upload letters using the given link.

Candidates who submit completed applications by November 10, 2017 will be given priority consideration. Review of applications will begin at that time and candidates will be notified of the results by late December. Contact [email protected] with any questions.
