Job Description

Grade 7: £31076-£38183 per annum

We invite applications for a postdoctoral researcher working with the design and development of HARMONI – the first light visible and near-infrared spectrograph being built for the Extremely Large Telescope. Oxford Astrophysics is playing a leading role in the design and construction of this workhorse first-light instrument, with Professor Niranjan Thatte as Principal Investigator. We are looking for a motivated early-career researcher to lead the work on simulations of astronomical observations with HARMONI. The post-holder is expected to focus their work on interfacing the products of cosmological large scale simulations with the HARMONI simulator (HSIM). The successful candidate will have or be about to receive a PhD in astronomy, physics, or engineering. They should have previously participated actively in developing astronomical simulations, either at the pre-doctoral or post-doctoral level. Strong experience in coding and one or more of (a) cosmological simulations of galaxies in the Universe at redshifts between 1 and 3, (b) analysis of integral field spectroscopic data, and (c) building an instrument simulator – is highly desirable. In addition, the candidate should have a demonstrated capacity for independent work and be capable of initiating research in a lively group.  The post-holder will have the opportunity to teach.

The post is for an initial period of two years, commencing 1 October 2017 (or as soon as possible thereafter) and is extendable to three years subject to continued funding from the research councils. It is based in Oxford Astrophysics.

Salary will be within the range £31076-£38183 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. A benefits package and a research budget for travel and other expenses will be provided.

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online. To apply for this role and for further details, including a job description and selection criteria, please click here.

Only applications received by 12:00 noon (UK time) on 14 August 2017 can be considered. You will be required to upload a statement of research interests, curriculum vitae, and list of publications, and the names and addresses of three referees as part of your online application.  In addition, candidates should arrange for the three letters of reference to be sent to [email protected] by the closing date.  Applications are acknowledged but not referee letters.  For further enquiries contact Professor Niranjan Thatte at [email protected]

Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford
