Job Description

ILOA Hawai'i is preparing to conduct Astronomy from the Moon in late 2021, and has a signed contract with Intuitive Machines to land its precursor ILO-X instruments at Schroter's Valley on IM-1 Nova-C after SpaceX launch.

ILO-X dual-camera 2+ cm lenses (see link for specs) will cover nearly 360° and attempt to capture the First Image of the Milky Way Galaxy from the Surface of the Moon, and other observations.

We need an Astrophysicist Associate (preferably PhD, beyond or equivalent) to assist with:

  • ILO-X instruments utilization, technical expertise for observation possibilities 2021-2022 -- with ILO-1 more advanced Astronomy from the Moon instrumentation to follow 2022+;
  • Connecting with our international astronomy directors in Canada, China, Southeast Asia / Thailand, India, Japan, Europe to solicit proposals and outreach;
  • On site / on the call for ILO technical meetings.

As the year progresses the exact launch date, and therefore, landing date and FOV of MWG (and possibly the opportunity to image the Solar eclipse in November) will become more concrete.

We estimate 5-10 hours a week of help is needed at this time to become familiar with our work and to accomplish tasks - this may increase as we get closer to launch / landing.

Some 'set schedule items' would be Monday ILOA missions overview telecoms at 10:00 HST for 1 hour; and tech meetings with Intuitive Machines are typically scheduled bi-weekly on Tuesdays 11:00 HST for about an hour, while we advance toward ILO-X instruments integration – however this may change.

Our preference would be to have someone able to be on-site / in Hawai'i (specifically Hawaii Island) if possible.
