Assistant Professor (Tenure Track), Dept. of Physics & Astronomy

Trent University invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the rank of Assistant Professor, to start July 1, 2020, subject to budgetary approval. Trent University is a top-ranked primarily-undergraduate school with a record of excellence in both teaching and research.

The successful candidate must have a PhD in physics, astronomy, or a closely related discipline; have an outstanding research track record; and have demonstrated excellence in teaching and/or mentorship.

The successful candidate is expected to attract external funding for a vibrant, independent research program at Trent in a field that complements existing research strengths of the department; attract and supervise graduate students and honours thesis students; teach courses across the undergraduate physics curriculum, showing a commitment to communicating complex ideas to students with diverse backgrounds through effective pedagogy; and contribute positively to the collegial functioning of the department and the university.

Current research areas in the department include condensed matter theory, observational astronomy, optics and biophotonics, and biomaterials characterization. Faculty supervise MSc and PhD students in the Materials Science Graduate Program and MSc students in the Applied Modelling & Quantitative Methods Graduate Program. The department delivers undergraduate degree programs in physics, mathematical physics, chemical physics, and computing systems & physics.

A complete application package must include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, evidence of excellence in research and a description of the research program the candidate proposes to build at Trent, and evidence of excellence in teaching including professional development and experience in instruction and training. In addition, three letters of reference which collectively address both research and teaching ability should be sent directly on the candidate’s behalf.
