Department of Astronomy

LSA Collegiate Fellows Program / President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

The Department of Astronomy at the University of Michigan seeks exceptional applicants for the LSA Collegiate Fellows Program and President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program.  The College of Literature, Science and the Arts (LSA) and the University seek applicants whose research, teaching, and service will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education. The program is particularly interested in scholars with a demonstrated interest in bringing to their teaching/mentoring, and/or service/engagement, and/or research the critical perspectives that come from nontraditional educational backgrounds and pathways, and/or scholarly understanding of the experiences of groups who are historically underrepresented or marginalized in higher education.  Successful candidates are offered either a postdoc alone or a combined postdoc and tenure track faculty appointment.  Fellows participate in a program that includes faculty mentoring, professional development, and academic networking opportunities.  The successful applicant can start as early as August 1, 2020.  Previous candidates from these programs include current tenured and tenure-track faculty members in the department.

The department will prioritize candidates having program synergy with ELT science.  The University of Michigan is in advanced negotiations with the ESO to participate in several European ELT instrument projects, in particular, METIS, HARMONI, MOSAIC, and HIRES.  Current research facilities available to the successful applicant include the twin Magellan 6.5-m telescopes in Chile, the MDM 1.3-m and 2.4-m telescopes on Kitt Peak, the Swift X-ray observatory, the NOEMA millimeter array, and the university’s high-performance computing facilities.

Applications will consist of:  1) CV; 2) Research statement; 3) Personal statement including commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; 4) Teaching statement; 5) Dissertation abstract; 6) Two sample papers; 7) Three letters of reference.  Please submit electronic (pdf) materials to [email protected], requesting recommenders to send their letters using the same procedure.  We ask that prospective applicants submit these materials by August 22, 2019.  The department will invite a subset of candidates for interviews.  Please see https://bit.ly/32B2CKd for detailed instructions.

E-mail inquiries may be directed to Department Chair, Edwin Bergin ([email protected]).  The University of Michigan is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.  Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.  The University is supportive of dual-career couples.
