The Inter Stellar+Galactic Medium Program of Studies (IMPS) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar, under the direction of Professor J. Xavier Prochaska in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics (https://www.astro.ucsc.edu/). The IMPS combines observational, numerical, and analytical studies of the I(S+G)M and of galaxy and star formation, and includes UCSC faculty Aguirre, Mathews, Madau, Robertson, and Prochaska. Details on the program can be found at http://imps.ucolick.org. The Postdoctoral Scholar will conduct forefront research on topics related to diffuse gas in the universe. Observers and theorists interested in I(S+G)M research, galaxy/IGM interactions, and star formation are encouraged to apply. This position will require the selected candidate to work independently yet collegially in a team environment. Along with other group members, the incumbent will have access to the Keck and Lick Observatories, data from the DESI experiment, and the Hyades super computer at UCSC.

ACADEMIC TITLE: Postdoctoral Scholar
SALARY: Starting salary is $54,780, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Annual salary rates must meet the minimum for an individual’s Experience Level, which is determined by the total number of months of postdoctoral service at any institution. - Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in Astronomy, Physics, Astrophysics, or a related field.
- A minimum of three years post-baccalaureate research experience in the fields of the interstellar or intergalactic medium at the time of application.
August 1, 2019. This is negotiable, but must be available to start no later than November 1, 2019. Ph.D. must be in hand at the time of initial appointment. Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment (for up to a total of three years).
MAXIMUM DURATION OF SERVICE IN A POSTDOCTORAL TITLE
Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time; the initial appointment is for a minimum of one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Reappointment will be contingent upon positive performance review and availability of funding. The total duration of an individual’s postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at any institution. Under limited circumstances, an exception to this limit may be considered, not to exceed a sixth year.
