Job Description

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of Germany’s leading research universities, addressing the whole range of academic disciplines. A highly dynamic setting enables researchers and students to work across the traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. To create knowledge networks within and beyond the university is Ruhr-Universität Bochum’s declared aim.

The Faculty of Physics and Astronomy at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum invites applications for a

W1 (Tenure Track W2) Professorship for Radioastromony (m/f/d).

Astrophysical research at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum is closely linked to plasma and particle physics via the research carried out here on the origin, propagation and interaction of cosmic rays, which must be described in magnetized plasma of different densities. Within astrophysics, RUB is involved in several large-scale research facilities, in particular CTA, IceCube, LOFAR, MeerKAT and SKA.

The future incumbent is expected to represent the field of observational astrophysics in research and teaching. The research focus should be on astrophysical questions that have a concrete connection to plasma astrophysics with strong involvement in the instrumentation and use of radio and/or submm observatories. Participation in research activities at one or more large-scale astrophysics facilities is desirable. Active participation in the Ruhr Astroparticle and Plasma Physics Center (RAPP Center) and the Research Department "Plasmas with Complex Interactions" is expected. In particular, the integration of the planned research activities into the context of SFB1491 "Cosmic Interacting Matters - From Source to Signal" is also important.

The position is tenure track for appointment to a W2 professorship. In case of a positive evaluation, the appointment to a W2 position will be made without advertisement in an appropriately simplified appointment process. The subject-specific criteria for the evaluation of the professorship can be obtained from https://l.rub.de/69c9882d.

A doctoral degree of outstanding quality as well as proof of special suitability for academic teaching are required, as is willingness to participate in academic self-administration. The appointment requirements according to § 36 ff. Hochschulgesetz NW must be fulfilled.

Furthermore, the following competences are expected

- a strong commitment to teaching, enthusiasm and didactic skills in the education of physics students as well as the supervision of bachelor and master theses;

- a willingness and proven track record in acquiring third-party funding;

- a willingness to engage in interdisciplinary, collaborative scientific work;

- commitment to academic self-administration and willingness to work in the field of public relations and promotion of young academics.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum stands for diversity and equal opportunities. For this reason, we favour a working environment composed of heterogeneous teams, and seek to promote the careers of individuals who are underrepresented in our respective professional areas. The Ruhr-Universität Bochum expressly requests job applications from women. In areas in which they are underrepresented they will be given preference in the case of equivalent qualifications with male candidates. Applications from individuals with disabilities are most welcome.

Applications with the usual documents (cover letter, curriculum vitae, scientific career, copies of certificates/diplomas, list of publications, proof of special suitability for academic teaching, list of courses, details of research interests, list of own third-party funding) are requested by 31/05/2023 to the Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum ([email protected]).
