Job Description

New Mexico State University is for a Chief Telescope Technologist for the  SDSS 2.5m telescope operations at Apache Point Observatory (APO).As the Sloan Digital Sky Survey moves into phase 5 with a new robotic fiber positioner, we are looking for a new Chief Telescope Technologist to manage the engineering , maintenance and operations of SDSS telescope facilities at APO.  Person will ;  Oversee and participate in the design ,fabrication, assembly and commission of new hardware, Develop and maintain operational procedures and maintenance schedules, Plan and coordinate maintenance work, Supervise, direct, and evaluate work of approximately seven  staff.  Person should be able to understand  design, fabrication and testing of various electro-, opto- mechanical systems for complex telescope systems, including interfaces and scientific instruments. Perform preventive and corrective maintenance to systems as necessary, and ensure safety and integrity. Monitor trends and correct anomalies. Perform troubleshooting and problem analysis. Specify procedures, schedule, and maintain spare lists for maintenance  and repair of telescope systems. Report activities and progress related to telescope systems engineering to APO Director of Operations. Specify, procure, maintain specialized mechanical, electronics, and optical test and maintenance equipment. Develop an annual plan and budget for telescope systems engineering activities and projects and manage annual shutdown activities which include disassembly, servicing and reassemble with collimation and commissioning. Loss time due to system failures is targeted at 0.5%.  Bachelor’s Degree in a related field with  ten (10) years of experience related to the standard duties as outlined or any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience as approved by Human Resource Services.  Position entails non-standard work schedule, including weekends and holidays as needed.
