Job Description

Applications are invited for up to two postdoctoral research positions in the area of exoplanets and planet formation at the Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (UAI) and the Millennium Institute for Astrophysics in Santiago, Chile.

The successful candidates will join the Astrophysics group which was founded in 2019 with the specific goal of becoming a centre of planetary astrophysics in Chile. Chile hosts some of the most advanced astronomical facilities in the world, such as ALMA, the ESO Very Large Telescopes, the Magellan 6.5m telescopes, Gemini South, among others. While a resident at UAI, the candidate will qualify as a member of the Chilean community with 10% privileged access to all of these facilities.

We welcome applications from both theoretical and observational astronomers whose research interests and experiences overlap and complement that of the current faculty (Pablo Benitez-Llambay, Rafael Brahm, Andres Jordan, Gijs Mulders, and Diego Muñoz).

The appointment will be for an initial period of two years, with renewal for a third year contingent upon satisfactory progress and availability of funding.

One of the positions is part of the international research network “Alien Earths” and has to be related to the formation and chemical composition of nearby planetary systems. This project also comes with the possibility of spending an additional year at the University of Chicago.

Applications require: a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a description of research experience and interests (3 pages), and contact information for three references willing to write letters of recommendation upon request. Applicants should apply by submitting the above materials as a single pdf file to Prof. Gijs Mulders <[email protected]> with the subject “Postdoc in Exoplanets”. Applications submitted by December 17th 2021 will receive full consideration.

The anticipated starting date is between March 2022 (the beginning of the academic year in Chile) and September 2022.
