Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 3 years.


The Managers of the Herchel Smith Postdoctoral Research Fellowships Fund invite applications for up to two Fellowships which would be held in the School of the Physical Sciences (SPS) of the University of Cambridge, either in the Institute of Astronomy (IoA) or the Department of Physics or the Department of ApplieMathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) all located at the west cambridge site. The fellowships are tenable from 1 October 2019 (or otherwise by negotiation) to research into the Extreme Universe. The fellowships provide an opportunity for independent research, although the holders will usually work in close collaboration with established research groups in one of the Departments in the School.

The Fellow would be expected to produce work of an international standard within their field, develop a hh degree of interaction with the faculty, postdoctoral researchers and research students and write scientific articles for publication in peer reviewed journals. Excellent communication and computing skills are required. We welcome applications from researchers in the broad fields of either astronomy, physics, applied mathematics or theoretical physics. The Fellowships are tenable for between two and three years. The Fellowship stipend will be on the University's Postdoctoral Research Associate scale with an annual research allowance of up to £15,000.

In accordance with Dr Smith's will, candidature is limited to candidates who have obtained their PhD degree, or equivalent, within the last three years at any university but normally excluding Cambridge and Harvard.Fellowships can only be offered to those with less than three years of postdoctoral experience by the time the award is taken up..
