Job Announcement Text:

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral appointment at Leiden Observatory in the group of Dr. Jacqueline Hodge. The position is financed as part of the ERC Consolidator Grant VOYAJ (PI: Hodge), which aims to leverage world-class facilities including the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to shed new light on early galaxy assembly. To this aim, the successful candidate will join an international collaboration and make use of a suite of rich multi-wavelength data. Candidates in all areas of extragalactic astronomy will be considered and are encouraged to apply.

The research will take place in the vibrant academic environment at Leiden Observatory, which carries out world-class research in the formation of structures in the universe and the origin and evolution of galaxies, the detection and characterization of exoplanets, and the formation of stars and planetary systems. Embedded in the Faculty of Science at Leiden University, Leiden Observatory is the largest astronomy department in the Netherlands, with about 35 faculty and adjunct faculty, 50 postdoctoral researchers, 80 PhD students, 30 support staff and over 100 MSc students. Leiden is a charming university town with an international flair.

The initial appointment will be for two years, with the possibility for a further one-year extension subject to a review during the second year. The position comes with a competitive salary and full benefits. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related field by the starting date, which is negotiable (earlier is preferred). Leiden University is strongly committed to diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from members of underrepresented groups.

Applications should be entered electronically in the job application system (link below).  A complete application includes a cover letter (with preferred starting date), CV, publication list, and a brief statement of research experience and interests (maximum 2 pages). In addition, applicants should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be submitted via the application link by the indicated deadline.

Review of completed applications will begin on 30 Oct, but we will accept applications until the position is filled.

Included Benefits:

Leiden University offers an attractive benefits package that includes additional vacation (8%) and end-of-year (8.3%) bonuses, sick leave, maternity and parental leaves, and retirement benefits. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break. For more information, please see: Leiden University Employment
