Job Description

The Max-Planck-Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) in Garching (near Munich), Germany, is a world-leading institute in space- and ground-based experimental astrophysics, with leading roles in a number of large astronomical projects.

Your task

MPE invites applications for a postdoctoral position in the field of observational cosmology.

We are searching for candidates with experience in galaxy clustering and/or numerical simulations of structure formation. The successful candidate will work with Dr Ariel Sanchez on the cosmological interpretation of data from galaxy redshift surveys.

Cosmological research at MPE covers both theory and observations and is focused on understanding the nature of dark energy, dark matter, massive neutrinos and inflation. At MPE, the successful applicant will join the consortia of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX), the Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) survey, the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), and the ESA space mission Euclid.

Your profile

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in (Astro-)Physics.

Our offer

The appointment will be for initially 2 years with the possibility of extension to 3 years. Start date is September 2023 (flexible). The position provides ample support for travel and publications, as well as access to high-performance computing resources. The salary and social benefits are based on the German TVöD scale for public employees, depending on experience.

Application

Applicants should submit their documents (in English, in PDF form) online ( https://recruitingapp-5257.de.umantis.com/Vacancies/529/Application/CheckLogin/2?lang=eng ), including a CV, a list of publications, and a brief description of research interests, by January 20, 2023. Later applications may be considered, if received before the selection process is completed. Applicants should also arrange for at least three letters of reference to be sent to Dr. Ariel Sanchez ([email protected]) by the same deadline.

The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.
