The Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics (ASIAA) has openings for faculty positions at the assistant, associate, and full research fellow levels. Candidates who work in (a) Optical/IR/Radio Astronomy, (b) Theoretical/Computational Astrophysics, and (c) Instrumentation (Optical/IR/Submillimeter) are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree in astronomy/astrophysics, physics, or engineering, and preferably have prior postdoctoral experience.
ASIAA is an institute of Academia Sinica, the leading national research organization of Taiwan. The Institute has approximately 200 staff members. Research areas include the Solar and Exoplanetary Systems, Star and Planet Formation, Astrochemistry, Evolved Stars and Compact Objects, Fast Radio Bursts and pulsars, SNe and SNRs, Galactic Dynamics, Active Galaxies, Galaxy Evolution, Galaxy Clusters, Cosmology, and Instrumentation Developments.
ASIAA has access to forefront radio observing facilities, including ALMA, SMA, JCMT, and Greenland Telescope (GLT). The VLBI group joins the Event Horizon Telescope in mm and submm observations of supermassive black holes. ASIAA leads the development and production of ALMA's Band 1 receivers and has established the ASIAA CASA Development Center for ALMA data reduction and analysis. In optical and IR wavelengths, ASIAA has gained access to the CFHT, Subaru Telescope and associated HSC and PFS surveys through participation in instrumentation developments. We have installed three 1.3m telescopes at San Pedro Mártir in Mexico for the TAOS-2 project to survey small objects beyond Neptune and conduct time domain science. We are also participating in the E-ELT first light instrument METIS project. ASIAA is an Associate Institutional Member of the SDSS-IV project and has joined LSST as its international contributor. The Theory Group at ASIAA is actively pursuing theoretical and computational astrophysics, aiming to develop numerical simulators to bridge observations and theories in the aforementioned research areas of ASIAA. The CompAS and CHARMS projects are devoted to in-house algorithm and code developments driven by challenges required by niche science. ASIAA offers excellent research facilities and an international environment, where English is the working language. We seek candidates who can lead the Institute's research programs, or initiate entirely new forefront programs.
