Job Announcement Text:

Applications are invited for two, 2-year postdoctoral research positions in the Astro-Ecology group at Liverpool John Moores University to help ecologists protect endangered animal species and conserve Earth’s biodiversity. The group aims to tackle one of the main challenges in drone/conservation research — efficiently extracting pertinent science information from the exponentially growing volumes of video data being produced. The key roles of the two positions are to (1) combine astronomical detection methods with deep learning algorithms for advanced image processing of nature conservation data to detect and identify animal species in thermal infrared and RGB video footage, and (2) develop an autonomous drone system that allows for real-time detection of animals/humans from thermal and RGB images and sends these classification results back to rangers on the ground. In collaboration with international conservation agencies (e.g. WWF) the applicants will take the system to conservation areas around the world (Asia, Africa, Central/South America) to help monitor and protect critically endangered animal species.

Applicants must have, or have recently submitted, a PhD either with (1) a very strong machine learning component (preferably related to deep convolutional neural networks and advanced image processing) or (2) related to robotics, autonomous systems and drones. The positions will be for 2 years. Please apply here — — and also send a cover letter, CV with bibliography, and details of previous research experience to Two letters of recommendation should be sent directly to with the subject line “Astro-Ecology Letter of Recommendation for [Applicant Name]".
