Job Description

Applications are invited for one post-doctoral position in extragalactic astronomy to work at the Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille (www.lam.fr), France. The appointment is for three years and is funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR) within the project "investigating MAssive Galaxy Emergence & Early Evolution" (https://collaborations.lam.fr/iMAGE/). Our group includes several PhD, postdocs, and permanent researchers at LAM and IAP.

Our project aims to study the rise of massive galaxies from the primordial Universe to z~2. This project combines a unique JWST dataset with state-of-the art hydro-dynamical simulations and machine learning techniques. The successful applicant is expected to work on the observational side of the project and use JWST data to gain new insights on the physics governing both the mass assembly and morphological transformations of massive galaxies in the early Universe.

The successful applicant will be based at LAM and will work closely with Drs Olivier Ilbert and Clotilde Laigle, as well as other members of the ANR project and COSMOS-Web teams. A second postdoc based at IAP and centered around hydrodynamical simulations will be advertised shortly. Our team is  involved in several JWST projects (COSMOS-Web, PRIMER and GTO-MIRI) as well as in cosmological and galaxy evolution surveys (Euclid, PFS-SuMIRe, LSST), with possible collaborations. The applicant will have access to two high-performance computer clusters as well as significant travel funding.

Applicants with previous experience in extragalactic observational astronomy and the high redshift Universe will be favored.  Applications should be uploaded at the following address emploi.cnrs.fr/Offres/CDD/UMR7326-ANAMEK-048/Default.aspx?lang=EN, and they should include a brief summary of previous research and a statement of current research interests (4 pages max), a curriculum vitae, and a list of publications. In addition, the names and email addresses of three referees should be provided. Referees will be contacted after having established the shortlist. Applications will be reviewed beginning November 3st, 2022, and the position will remain open until filled. Starting dates are negotiable, with a preferred period between December 2022 and June 2023.

The salary will be fixed at the standard post-doc level, based on experience. Health insurance, parental leave, state-subsidized schools and childcare are provided to all employees in France.
