Job Description

Post-doctoral Fellow in Astrophysics/Astronomy in the Department of Physics (Ref.: 493966)

Applications are invited for appointment as Post-doctoral Fellow in Astrophysics/Astronomy in the Department of Physics (Ref.: 493966), to commence in fall 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter for two years, with the possibility of renewal subject to funding availability and satisfactory performance.

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Physics or Astronomy, or a related discipline. Those who are expected to complete a Ph.D. degree before fall 2019 will also be considered.

The appointee will participate in the Joint Sophie and Tycho Brahe Post-doctoral Fellowship Program in Astrophysics/Astronomy jointly offered by the Department of Physics, the University of Hong Kong and the DARK centre at the Niels Bohr Institute, Denmark. The Program is intended primarily for theoretical and computational astrophysicists working in the following research areas: black hole accretion and jet physics, binaries, transient science including tidal disruption events and mergers of compact objects, quasars and AGN feedback to galaxies. The appointee will carry out original research in astrophysics, both independently and in collaboration with faculty, postdoctoral researchers and students at the two institutes. He/She will also collaborate with Dr. Jane Lixin Dai, who will be a faculty at the University of Hong Kong as well as Sophie and Tycho Brahe Visiting Professor at DARK. Exceptional candidates in all areas of astronomy are encouraged to apply. The Program also provides substantial support for travel, computation and publications, and the appointee is expected to divide time between two institutes. Information about the Department and DARK can be obtained at https://www.physics.hku.hk and https://dark.nbi.ku.dk.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.

The University only accepts online application for the above post. Applicants should apply online at the University’s careers site (http://jobs.hku.hk) and upload an up-to-date C.V., a cover letter (including a list of publications) and a brief research statement not exceeding two pages. Applicants should also arrange three reference letters to be sent to Dr. Jane Lixin Dai (e-mail: [email protected]) directly by the referees. Review of applications will start as soon as possible and continue until March 31, 2019, or until the post is filled, whichever is earlier.

The University is an equal opportunities employer and is committed to equality, ethics, inclusivity, diversity and transparency
