Job Description

Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is the science operations center for several NASA missions. This includes the Hubble Space Telescope, the most famous space observatory in history, and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), planned to launch in 2021. The Space Telescope Science Institute is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to contribute new software to support the calibration of observations to enable the next generation of discoveries in astrophysics! At STScI, you will be building innovative calibration software for processing and analysis of observations from NASA's flagship observatories.

Your primary responsibilities in this job include:

In this position, you will be responsible for developing software for processing astronomical data in a fast paced, multi-mission environment. You will build calibration software capable of reductions of astronomical observations and interact with astronomers to deliver innovative solutions to solve cutting-edge astronomical problems.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Developing software for spectroscopic data reductions
  • Contributing to open source python packages for scientific analysis
  • Automating pipeline processing and data quality monitoring

Your Qualifications and Job Requirements:

  • You are able to identify problems and implement solutions and offer guidance to development teams and end-users.
  • Expertise in using Python.
  • Expertise in data reduction for astronomical observations
  • Familiarity with open source libraries like numpy, scipy, and astropy
  • Familiarity using Git in a team setting
  • Familiarity with test development for software
  • Familiarity with spectroscopy, infrared observations, and astronomy
  • Strong teamwork, analytical, problem-solving, planning and organizational skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.

This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residence in order to meet ITAR requirements.

Bachelor’s Degree in IT, Computer Science, Engineering, Astronomy, or related field. The position level and salary are commensurate with education and experience.
